MDEEP

Mobile Data, Environmental Extremes and Population (MDEEP) is a first-stage project in a longer-term initiative aimed at method development and building the capacity of Bangladesh stakeholders to analyze and respond to climate driven extremes using newly available big data and analytical techniques. The aim of the first stage is to use anonymous mobile call data records (CDR) provided by Grameenphone together with other data to analyze population movements before and after a climate driven extreme event, Cyclone Mahasen, which struck the southern districts of Bangladesh in May 2013, affecting 1.3 million people. The project brings together relevant Bangladeshi ministries, telecommunications industry leaders, and the research and disaster response communities to improve responses to future weather extremes.

Project milestones:

  • September 2013: Project presentation and stakeholder engagement with the disaster response community and government agencies at the UNU-EHS/ICCCAD 2013 Resilience Academy in Dhaka, Bangladesh
  • October 2013: Policy report launch and press event in Dhaka, Bangladesh.
  • November 2013: Dissemination of findings in conjunction with United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) Conference of Parties (COP) 19 in Warsaw, Poland.
