Nature-based Solutions (NbS) Programme

Programme Description:

Nature-based solutions involve the protection, restoration and/or management of natural ecosystems in rural areas and cities in order to protect communities, infrastructure and agriculture from climate change impacts while drawing down carbon and supporting biodiversity. Being an ‘umbrella concept’, NbS have the potential to tackle climate change impacts at relatively low-cost whilst delivering multiple benefits for people and nature. Staying at the forefront of climate vulnerabilities coupled with multiple socio-economic complexities, Bangladesh needs to develop a roadmap to integrate NbS at the national and local level planning to promote sustainable development in harmony with nature.

The NbS programme at ICCCAD aims to support nature-based initiatives in Bangladesh and sensitize the wider group of stakeholders through collating scientific evidence and evidence from practice, generating knowledge, capacity building and policy advocacy.

Current Projects

This project is contributing to the on-going efforts of the ‘NbS Initiative’ of the University of Oxford to mainstream NbS as a crucial resilience building option through networking, evidence-base creation, capturing NbS knowledge, experiences and processes, and disseminating the same through appropriate national and international platforms, channels, and processes. Establishing and operationalize a ‘NbS Bangladesh Portal’ is a major activity that the project is trying to achieve. The project is also working on creating and harnessing opportunities to integrate NbS in the development planning of the country.

The project is being funded by the University of Oxford, and the part of supporting the development of NbS Bangladesh Portal is being carried out by ICCCAD. The project timeline is February 2020 to November 2020.
